The need for speed
The term “information superhighway” is defined in the McGraw-Hill Computer Desktop Encyclopedia as, “a proposed high-speed communications system that was touted by the Clinton/Gore administration to enhance education in America in the 21st Century. Its purpose was to help all citizens regardless of their income level. The Internet was originally cited as a model for this superhighway; however, with the explosion of the World Wide Web, the Internet became that information superhighway.”
With the implementation of the World Wide Web in 1991, the world has now seen ever two-decades worth of web-related informational and technological advancements. The great impact that these advancing computer systems and other information technologies have made to the world has completely changed the workings of the economy and the requirements for the future workforce.
To be successful in the world of tomorrow, students will need to learn how to effectively use computers and their applications so they can become educated and qualified to work in our web-based world. What better way to become more technology proficient than to do your schooling through an online college? And, if you can get a laptop for going to school, why not do it?
How do I sign up and receive a laptop for college?
Several online schools provide laptops to their students so they can access their classes and use the computers to work on assignments. Online colleges and universities believe that if students have the tools they need to complete their education, there’s nothing else to really stop you from succeeding. An example of this is when an accounting student needs to learn how to make a spreadsheet. Today’s accounting is not like the bookkeeping of yore. Today, you can’t just buy a paper notebook ledger and record all your information in pencil. You need to enter in all the correct values and equations, and learn to use the proper functions, in an electronic computer-based application to get an accounting job these days. This day and age it’s MacBook or bust.
It’s rare but some schools even offer free software that comes preloaded on the computer. Even if your computer doesn’t come with preinstalled programs, there are plenty of free resources on the web. With technology like this at your reach, it’s hard to resist signing up to get a computer.
Are there any catches?
Everyone always says “nothing comes for free.” Well, they were right. Most of the online colleges that provide laptops for “free” are actually including the actual or rental costs of the computer in your tuition bill. Some online schools only offer to let students keep their “free” computer once they have graduated from their online college program. So, if a student does decide to drop out, they might be obligated to return the laptop post-haste. Students are also frequently responsible for providing their own software, replacement power cords and batteries, should the old ones become destroyed or unusable. Another huge bummer is that you must purchase a replacement laptop with your own money should you lose the one they issue or if it gets stolen from you.
Online Schools that Offer Laptops
Still, it is nice to have a laptop included in the cost of your education. At least, it is worth looking into. Check out some of the online college programs you’re interested in and see if they offer the option of providing a laptop. Since you need an education to advance in this era-of-information anyway, it’s worth a try.
